What are tags for music?
To organize a music library, you’ll need to add tags to your music files. Tags are a form of a metadata (data which provides information about other data). With music, this usually encompasses information about songs including, but certainly not limited to, the title, the artist, the album, the track number, the genre, and the date of release.
How do they work?
Tags are pieces of text that are associated with any digital audio file, and are able to be read and displayed by most music players and music library managers. This enables the music to be sorted by the information contained in the tags. For instance, if you kept all of your MP3 files in one folder, you could tell your music player to play a certain album, and it would know to do so based on the tags.
What types of tags are there?
There are several different competing standards for music tags, but the most commonly used and supported one is ID3v2.4. Other options include APE tags and Vorbis Comments.
